Processing Returns Using Truss Prep
🎥 Video
Truss lets you outsource tax return prep with AI: click the rocket ship on a return, confirm the AI-filled intake details, and upload your backup file plus last year's return. Once submitted, you'll get an email with the completed return, review notes, and an updated backup file — 1040s only for now, with billing after tax deadlines.
🚀 Start an AI-Prepped Return
Hover over the return row and click the rocket ship icon that appears — this kicks off AI-assisted prep.

📝 Confirm the Intake Details
AI will pre-fill most of the intake form for you, but a few fields still need your confirmation:
- Dependents — confirm the count (e.g., zero dependents).
- Client type — select whether this is a new client or an amended return.
- State and filing status — these are pre-filled, but double-check them.
- Notes for the preparer — add any notes you'd like the preparer to see.
☝️ Tip: Always make sure to verify the information before proceeding!
📂 Upload the Required Files
Two files are needed to submit the return for prep:
- Backup file from your tax prep software
- Last year's tax return
Drag and drop both files into Truss. If you're not sure how to generate the backup file, check the how-to article linked below — most tax software lets you generate it from a menu option, then you simply drag and drop it in.
✅ Submit for Prep
Once both files are uploaded, click Submit for Prep. That's it — the return is now in the queue.
💵 Billing
No need to worry about billing at submission — all charges are invoiced after tax deadlines.
📧 When the Return Is Ready
You'll receive an email notification once prep is complete. It will include:
- Review notes from the preparer
- An updated backup file
- The completed return PDF
🏃➡️ What to Do Next
- Review the completed return and any preparer notes.
- Upload the updated backup file to your tax prep software.
- You're done!
